Go West RV’ers…

Our next trip is our longest so far… one week at Maverick Ranch RV Park in Lajitas, Texas next to Big Bend National Park. Located on west side of Texas next to the border. Are we ready for such a long adventure???

Two weeks prior to leaving, our big RV slide stopped extending and retracting. Then our steps started making a grinding noise. A week in the shop, and we are ready to begin our western adventure… we thought!?!?

Day 1 – We left the cabin Wednesday morning about 7:15am and arrived at a rest area just across the Texas border around 8pm. First stop was a rest area to eat lunch. Found out our battery for our towed CRV was dead. Bummer!

Then we stopped to get gas and mistakenly locked us out of the RV. Argh! Luckily our friends had a step ladder and our friend, Lisa, crawled thru the passenger window to get us out of a jam!

Back on the road finally til supper at Cracker Barrel. Made a Walmart run then stopped to get gas. Then found out the pumps were out of gas and we got stuck trying to get out. Had to disconnect the car, push it out of the way to turn the RV around, then jumped off the battery from our friends car, then reattached it at another gas station. Drove about 15 minutes to the rest area to spend the night. Arrived to find only one empty trucker slot, then one trucker decided to leave getting us eac a place to park for overnight. Quite an adventure for day 1! Surely Day 2 can’t get any worse…

A nice little coffee shop on site of the rest area we stayed at

Last Day in North GA Mountains

Today is our last day here. We have really enjoyed the beautiful scenery, the wonderful Christmas lights, and the German architecture. It has been relaxing, but did lots of walking. We are thankful to have such good friends like Brad and Lisa to help us learn the ropes of being an RV’er. We’ve had fun on this very short trip. Hope to spend more time in the RV next year. Next big trip will be in March 2020!

Helen, GA

Saturday afternoon, we went back to Helen, GA to see the sites and shops during the daytime. Very Gatlinburg-like, but maybe not so busy. However, by late afternoon it was crowded. Found the perfect magnet to put on our RV refrigerator to remember our trip to Helen. After walking for miles up and down and around Helen, we found a little tavern to stop and have dinner. The food was great. Watched the 2nd half of the LSU vs. GA game while there. LSU won 37-10 in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. Tomorrow is our last day to visit the area, then Monday it is time to return back to our cabin.

Dahlonega, GA

On Saturday morning, we went to Dahlonega, GA for some shopping. It was a beautiful day, perfect for some shopping downtown at the square, all decorated for Christmas. Didn’t see Santa Claus, but did see Mr. Grinch! We ate lunch at Pueblo’s Mexican Restaurant.

On the Road to the GA Mountains…

We decided to visit Dahlonega and Helen, Georgia this weekend. Left on Friday to go to Yonah Mountain Campground in our RV. First time we are towing a vehicle. Having fun with our friends Brad and Lisa Tuten, neighbors at the RV and Cabin Resort. After setting up at the campground, we went to Helen, GA to see all the lights after dark and ate at Paul’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant.

Home again…

We left Pine Mountain RV Resort about 9:30am. Stopped by Buddy Gregg RVs for a little bit with Brad and Lisa to see if they could trade in their RV for a late model new one, but couldn’t work a deal.🙁. Stopped at a rest area to eat some lunch then travelled home arriving about 5:30pm. We are pretty tired from the whirlwind of a trip and a traffic-filled interstate. But happy to be home again and memories made.

A busy day in the Smokies

We awoke somewhat early (7am) and left around 8am to go eat breakfast at The Log Cabin restaurant on Airport Road in Gatlinburg. It was a big breakfast at that. We all were full as ticks (my Mom would have said)! From there we went through the Craftsman Loop and shopped at several of the places on that trail. On the way to Cherokee, saw a baby bear cub up in a tree. Way up in a tree (see picture).

We ate a late lunch at Wize Guys in Cherokee. Good sandwiches and onion rings. Shopped some more in Cherokee then went back through Gatlinburg one more time. Started a new tradition for our RV travels… we are starting a magnet collection for our RV refrigerator. Bought our first magnet showing several places we visited in the Smokies this time. Renee took the dare to stick her feet in the Little Pigeon River. Stopped by the Tanger Outlets and looked into the Vera Bradley store for a few minutes. Went to Publix, bought some steaks, kabobs and sausage and cooked out with our friends, Brad and Lisa, at our RV park. Had some good taters, green beans, and watermelon with our meats. Full again! And was cheap! Took a short walk around the RV neighborhood, talked to some RV park neighbors, then decided to turn in for the night. More travels tomorrow on our way back to civilization (and work?!?!).

Our first trip in our RV… the Smoky Mountains

We arrived at The WalMart parking lot on Sunday evening in Athens, TN. Then arrived at the Pine Mountain RV Resort (https://pinemountainrvpark.com) in Pigeon Forge Monday morning Really nice place (see picture).

We stopped at the Knife Superstore in Sevierville. First time there. Huge collection of knives. Ate lunch at Corky’s BBQ then walked up and down the strip in Gatlinburg. Took the Roaring Fork Nature Trail, but no bear sightings. Arg! Then got some ice cream and milk shakes at Marble Slab Creamery before bed. Yea, I know what you are thinking… retirement can be fattening! Slept like a baby that night.

Purchased our first RV

We agreed to purchase our used 2018 Tiffin on Friday, came back on Tuesday to make the final deal and pick it up from Marvin Ingram RV Center in Montgomery. Our neighbor friends decided to take their RV and give us our first experience of “boon docking”. We traveled down on Monday evening and parked in the parking lot of Bass Pro Shops in Montgomery. That was fun. Made the deal and we got to drive for the first time an RV. Our friends joined us for lunch at Sweet Creek restaurant. Another wonderful place to eat. They served BBQ and other delicious items. And the largest and best homemade cookies you could ever eat. We pulled into our driveway that evening, and it just fit. Have to hit Larry up for a separate paved parking area for our RV. Another fun day with our RV.
